Who We Are

A Legacy of Faith Since 1880
The Liberia Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention was born from a vision of unity and purpose. In 1880, Baptist churches across Liberia came together, recognizing the great virtue in the principle of “Strength in Unity.” These faithful pioneers established an organization dedicated to two inseparable goals: spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ and advancing education.

For over 145 years, the LBMEC has remained faithful to this founding vision. Through times of growth and challenge, peace and conflict, our Convention has continued to serve as a beacon of faith and hope for the Liberian people.

Our Journey
1880 – The Beginning Baptist churches unite to form the Liberia Baptist Missionary and Educational Convention, establishing a foundation for faith and education in Liberia.

Early Years The Convention expands its reach across Liberia, establishing churches, schools, and mission stations throughout the country.

Educational Growth The establishment of key educational institutions including seminaries, secondary schools, and eventually university-level education, fulfilling the Convention’s commitment to building human capacity.

2014 – Constitutional Reform Adoption of an updated constitution to guide the Convention into the modern-era while maintaining our historic principles.

2025 – 110th Annual Session The Convention meets in Sanniquellie, Nimba County, adopting a new amended constitution on February 15, 2025, ensuring our continued relevance and effectiveness for future generations.

A Continuing Legacy
Today, the LBMEC continues to grow and serve. With churches in all 15 counties, organized into five regions with five Baptist associations, we remain committed to our founding mission. Our auxiliaries serve every generation—from children in Sunbeam to elders in our congregations. Our educational institutions continue to produce leaders who serve Liberia and the world.

As we look to the future, we remain “Laborers Together With God,” building on the foundation laid by those faithful pioneers over 145 years ago
